A light fixture, also known as a light fitting in the UK or a luminaire in the US, is an electrical system that holds an electric bulb for illumination. Any light fixture has a fixture body and one or more lights. The bulbs may be in sockets for easy replacement or, in the case of some LED fixtures, hard-wired in place. In some fixtures, a switch for monitoring the light can be linked to the lamp body or the power line. Permanent light fixtures, such as dining room chandeliers, do not have a built-in switch and rely on a wall switch instead. Light fixtures may include reflectors for focusing light, an aperture (with or without a lens), an outside shell or housing for lamp orientation and safety, an electrical ballast or power source, and a shade to diffuse or guide light into a workstation (e.g., a desk lamp). Automotive lighting, as well as the aerospace, marine, and medical industries, require specialised light fixtures.
Lighting fixtures need to be connected to a power source, which is typically AC mains electricity, however, some are battery-powered for camping or emergency lighting. Permanent lighting fixtures are wired directly. Movable illumination comes with a plug and cord that plugs into a wall outlet.
