Merewether is a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, with a population of roughly 11,000 people. It is located 3 kilometres (2 miles) from Newcastle’s core business district. From Merewether Beach in the east to Adamstown in the west, the suburb runs for 3 kilometres (2 miles).

Merewether is home to some of Newcastle’s most well-known beaches. Dixon Park Beach leads south to Merewether Beach and then on to Burwood Beach, which leads to Glenrock Lagoon. The Merewether Ocean Baths, the largest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere, are located at the southern end of Merewether Beach. Merewether Beach is home to Merewether SLSC, the Hunter Region’s oldest lifesaving club, and Merewether Surfboard Club, Australia’s most successful boardriders club.

Merewether Public [State] School in Henry Street at the Glebe, the Catholic Holy Family Primary School in Janet Street, and Hamilton South Public School, which is actually located within the Merewether postcode area on Kenrick Street, are the three primary schools in the neighbourhood. Merewether Heights Public School on Scenic Drive and The Junction Public School (established in 1860) are two more schools in Merewether Heights and The Junction, respectively, on the suburbs’ shared borders. (The Junction was only gazetted as a separate suburb in 1991.) Pupils from the schools go to Newcastle High School, Kotara High School, Catholic St Pius X College in Adamstown, or the Anglican-affiliated Newcastle Grammar School for secondary education. Merewether High School, an academically selective public high school, is 600 metres (1,969 feet) from Merewether in the Broadmeadow area.
